Summary
This position exists to ensure efficient operation of the optical sorting equipment and related systems in the plant. The individual in this position will be required to fully understand the mechanics, basic electrical troubleshooting, and machine configuration of the equipment and have the ability to make decisions based on sound judgment when a situation dictates. It is imperative this person conduct themselves in a manner that ensures alertness and constant awareness of the safe operation of equipment and its surroundings. Work relationships and communications are key ingredients to the success of the individual holding this role. They must be able to maintain open communications and productive work relationships with operators, laborers, mechanics, electricians, supervisors, and managers. The area of work includes both inside the facility and outside, depending on work requirements, with most time spent working on facility equipment.
Key Responsibilities
• Maintains, troubleshoots and calibrates optical and other sorting equipment, conveyors, chillers, and associated systems.
• Inspects, maintains and replaces or repairs belts, air nozzles, ejectors, cameras, lenses and other mechanical components.
• Test electrical systems or circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, BUS networks or fixtures using testing devices such as DMMs to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
• Maintain lists of spare parts needed, request and plan to support running plant operations and preventative maintenance.
• Troubleshoots and makes minor and major repairs of equipment, including automation systems, in order to prevent or minimize equipment and machine downtime, equipment, or components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
• Enters and performs work on work orders; plans and schedules additional work as needed.
• Understand the purpose of Preventative Maintenance and Predictive Maintenance and participates in these Programs.
• Maintains work area in a clean and functional condition.
• Must be able to locate parts and reference part numbers.
• Must be able to accurately enter data into computer and into daily paperwork in a timely manner.
• Ensures attendance and participation in training activities appropriate to the position.
Typical Education
A post‑secondary diploma, certificate, or trade qualification in a related field is required. Preference will be given to candidates holding a Class M‑T Electrical License or equivalent. Applicants who do not currently possess this license must be willing to obtain it as a condition of employment.
Relevant Experience
5+ years related experience and/or training
Other Information
- Must have a working knowledge of basic electrical safety practices.
- Must have an understanding of DC voltage systems (0 to 240V) and AC voltage systems (24 to 600V).
- Must have a working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code.
- Must be able to use voltage testers, meggers, amp probes, and other electrical test equipment.
- Demonstrate the ability to do basic math, and the ability to compute rate, ratio, percent, be able to read a tape measure, and measure with calipers.
- Must be able to read and understand basic electrical blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Must be able to read, write and communicate in English in a manner to successfully perform job duties.
- Must have above average computer skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work in extreme environments: hot, cold, wet, and slick floors.
- Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, catwalks, and maneuver in close quarters.
- Must be able to use appropriate personal protective equipment, such as respirators, SCBA, and safety harness as appropriate for given tasks.
- Must have complete understanding and safe operation of hand, power, and shop tools.
- Must furnish own hand tools.
