Boiler Operator (Crew D)

Summary

  • The boiler mechanic is a member of the maintenance team, which includes wet end mechanics, packaging mechanics, electricians, process control technicians, grounds waste disposal attendants, team leaders, area supervisors, and the department manager.  This position reports primarily to the Boiler/Refrigeration maintenance supervisor and to the maintenance team leader and shift manager on shift. 
  • The individual in this position must be capable of performing mechanical repairs in all areas of their responsibility and be fully capable of operating all Boiler equipment and support systems. 
  • The individual in this position must establish and maintain open communications and productive work relationships with maintenance team leaders, operators, attendants, laborers, mechanics, maintenance supervisors, the shift manager and all area team leaders. 
  • The area of work includes both inside the facility and outside, depending on work requirements.  Weekend and overtime work in this position is common and may be required to meet operational goals.  This position requires the ability to work in extreme environments of both hot and cold. 
  • The individual in this position will be required to fully understand the purpose and operation of the boiler system and have the ability to make decisions based on sound judgment when a situation dictates.  It is imperative the boiler mechanics conduct themselves in a manner that ensures alertness and constant awareness of the safe operation of equipment and its surroundings. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensures there is no injury to self or others by following safe work practices (including Standard Operating Procedures) and policies.
  • Attend and participate in all training activities for the position.  Ensure the acquired skills and knowledge are applied.
  • Ensures sanitation of equipment and housekeeping of the entire facility.
  • Ensures self-compliance with Company policies, Standard Operating Procedures, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Must be a team player and help to meet operational goals.
  • Conducts oneself in a professional manner and ensures that personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job functions while representing the Company.
  • Performs all such other duties as may be reasonably assigned by Manager.
  • Ensures the operation of the boiler system is conducted efficiently and safely in cooperation with the maintenance team leader, process team leader, and packaging team leader to achieve operational goals.
  • Ensures the efficient operation of all equipment, including cooking oil pumps, in the Boiler area by using preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, boiler chemical test, overhauling and repairing equipment to achieve operational goals under the supervision of the Boiler/Refrigeration supervisor. 
  • Ensures the accuracy of data reporting systems such as boiler logs, boiler water chemical reports and rail car documents.  
  • Performs Acetylene cutting and heating in a safe and correct manner when repairing and fabricating equipment. 
  • Ensures that work orders are completed as assigned.
  • Maintains work area in a clean and functional condition. 
  • Responsible for unloading cooking oil and its distribution to the plant processing lines and unloading of fuel oil into storage tanks, keeping production and purchasing departments informed of shortages or impending problems.
  • Has a valid steam engineer’s license: MN Special Engineer's License to MN 1st Class B License.
  • Must pass boiler operator structured job training.
  • Proficient at water testing and conditioning, and the safe operation of the high-pressure steam boiler.
  • Must be able to read and interpret written instructions, manufacturers’ manuals, material safety data sheets and engineering drawings.  
  • Must be able to use written logbooks, plant computer system, and maintenance work order and supply system. 
  • Must be able to use personal protective equipment, such as safety harness, eyeglasses, hardhat, and gloves.

Typical Education

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Relevant Experience

  • 5+ years related experience and/or training

Other Information

  • Must obtain CIRO certification within 1 year, and 2 years’ experience OR recognized boiler safety training. Must provide required tools.
  • Must have successfully completed the Job Skill Evaluation to begin training in the position.  Must complete the Structured Job Training program within recommended timeframe to remain in the position permanently.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and calculate percentages to make proper adjustments and calibrations, as required.
  • Must be able to read, understand, and communicate in English in a manner to successfully complete job duties.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (steam traps, heavy valves, motors, etc.)
  • Must be able to demonstrate manual and physical dexterity.
  • Must be able to work with hazardous and corrosive chemicals in small areas.
  • Must be able to tell time and be able to convert regular time to military time.
  • Must be able to use a computer and successfully navigate through various applications. Must be proficient at computer system data entry.
  • Must be able to maneuver in close quarters and climb stairs, ladders, and catwalks on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to stand on concrete floors for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work in extreme environments (cold, hot, humid and slippery).
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to identify hazards and report to appropriate personnel.
  • Must have an acceptable attendance record.
  • Must have an acceptable safety record.
  • Must be able to work in stressful situations
