Tax Accountant

Summary
The Tax Accountant position will, under general supervision, complete a variety of moderately complex indirect tax activities, including compliance, research, and process improvements related to sales and use, fuel and mileage, and federal and state excise taxes.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the indirect tax function in a fast-paced working environment while developing tax and business knowledge
- Prepare and file indirect tax returns, including sales and use tax returns, federal excise tax returns (Form 720), Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax returns (Form 2290), fuel tax reports, and other transaction tax returns as required.
- Review sales and purchase transactions to ensure compliance with state and local tax laws, including proper taxability determinations and exemption certificate management.
- Assist with indirect tax audits, notices, information requests, and examinations by federal, state, and local taxing authorities.
- Support tax technology initiatives, process improvements, and automation efforts related to sales, use, excise, and fuel taxes.
- Gather, analyze, and reconcile data from financial and operational systems to support indirect tax return preparation and compliance activities.
- Partner with business and accounting personnel across the organization to ensure accurate indirect tax reporting and compliance.
- Research indirect tax laws and communicate findings to supervisors and customers.
Typical Education
| Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S.) from 4 year college or university |
Relevant Experience
- 1-3 years of public accounting or large corporate tax experience (CPA is a plus).
- Experience in indirect tax issues both federal and state (Sales and Use Tax, Fuel Tax, Federal Excise including Superfund and Insurance Premium Tax) is a plus.
- Experience with SAP and OneSource Indirect is a plus.
- Experience with sales and use tax audits is a plus.
- Detail-oriented with ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement in problem resolution.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships across various functional areas.
