Global Food Sensory Manager

Summary

The Global Sensory Manager provides global sensory leadership to manufacturing locations and affiliate offices across the business footprint (domestic and international). This position represents Simplot sensory to top tier customers providing input supported by scientific data on sensory attributes and product differentiation, along with providing critical sensory interface with our customers.  Provides unbiased research with testing that is developed, executed, and reported to help make development decisions. 

 

The manager will lead highly complex projects that require development of technical solutions (potentially assembling from multiple sources and/or disciplines), set strategy for the sensory and product development group in conjunction with the  Sr. Director as well as be the champion for the Food Group and Company sensory education program globally.  This may include items such as the following: research of best practices, project planning, industry knowledge and awareness, managing resources, partnerships, communication (both technical and non-technical) and staying current on technologies and trends within sensory sciences.  Work will encompass multiple food science categories & platforms and scientific disciplines.  Manages technical resources such as scientists, technologists, technicians, trained sensory panelists, and interns.  Provides technical knowledge and/or insight to a variety of functions, employees, suppliers and customers.  Responsible for managing sensory staff, including hiring, development and succession planning.  Develops, implements and maintains sensory programs for product development, technology assessment, quality control, and product improvement. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide training of technical staff in basic statistical methods including experimental design (DOE), process capabilities, measurement of accuracy and error in methods, statistical process control, and analysis of variance. Provide practical guidance on differentiating results that are significant versus important.
  • Designs and manages implementation of sensory training programs. Assist with the development and training of associates, support staff and plant staff globally. Verify compliance to factory sensory program requirements. Implementation of sensory specifications in production facilities where required. Work on cross-functional teams to ensure success of sensory initiatives.
  • Manage sensory research in support of quality systems, product development and process initiatives. Expertise in planning, execution and analysis of sensory research. Mastery of: Design, discrimination testing, descriptive analysis, affective testing and questionnaire design. Effectively present insights and recommendations to product development teams, product/process improvement teams and Customers at the Director and VP level. Lead and guide implementation and development of sensory-related quality initiatives supporting product lifecycle preservation.
  • Manage sensory sites and staff. Includes the managing of the maintenance and development of the trained descriptive sensory panel. Develop screening and performance criteria regarding precision, sensitivity and repeatability of panel output. Oversee the recruiting and training of new panelists, developing new methods when appropriate, management of the sensory testing locations and assets, planning, budgeting, and forecasting of sensory operations that are approved or in-line with corporate requirements and that are within budget and planning for ongoing sensory operations.

Typical Education

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S.) from 4 year college or university

Relevant Experience

  • 7-10 years related experience and/or training in multiple food science and technical disciplines (dehydrated, meats, dairy, sauces, vegetables, frozen potatoes, guacamole, quality, operations, auditing).  Requires experience in sensory management, team management, project management, and developing products to serve various market channels (food service, retail, chain, deli).  Proven track record of successfully managing technical and/or regulatory projects, processes or systems. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong leadership skills
  • The ability to lead trained panels and manage employee panels.
  • The ability to explain complex concepts to other staff members
  • Strong experience in research and development
  • Strong statistical knowledge

  • Willingness to travel to other locations (domestic and international) as required.
