Scientist, Plant Pathologist

Summary

This role supports the effort to improve the agronomic performance of potato and, potentially, other crops through biotechnology. Specifically, improvement of disease resistance of potatoes is the primary focus of this role.  The scientist in role should work independently and with a team to set up and carry out experiments. The scientist in role should look to optimize existing methods and discover new methods.  Person in role is expected to act as a principal investigator, driving multiple projects simultaneously.  It is expected that the scientist will eventually demonstrate a working understanding of all projects within Simplot Plant Sciences. He/she is expected to provide mentoring to and supervise other employees as a primary job function.

  • Participate in carrying out routine lab functions including but not limited to, biohazards waste containment and removal, inventory, cleaning of lab equipment and supplies, preparing reagents, and collecting and disposing of transgenic tissues.
  • Applies appropriate technologies to solutions of high complexity.
  • Write detailed standard operating procedures and protocols.
  • Authors scientific manuscripts and patent applications.
  • Adeptly sets up complex experiments, interpret, analyze and summarize experimental data.

Typical Education

  • Doctoral degree (Ph. D.). Academic studies focused to molecular plant pathology, plant pathology, plant-microbe interactions, or closely related disciplines

Relevant Experience

  • 1+ years related experience and/or training, preferably in the private sector
  • Advanced understanding and consolidated expertise in a field of plant biotechnology.
  • Proficient use of appropriate tools to document and analyze experiments
  • Critical thinking skills to perform assays, gather data, develop process improvements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working collaboratively and independently in support of team efforts.
  • Some travel nationally to supervise collaborative research projects and field trials
  • Some travel (maybe 1-2X annually) to international destinations for the same purpose as above
