Summary
The Director of Environmental Permitting leads the team responsible for the environmental permitting and compliance assistance activities for Simplot. In addition to providing guidance and mentoring for the technical team, this role is a liaison with each business group to ensure the team’s work is aligned with the short- and long-term strategic plans. This role will also collaborate closely with the environmental programs team members to ensure regulatory requirements are captured in the Company environmental software and that assessment questionnaires, guidance documents, and training content are reflective of current requirements.
Successful individuals will oversee the management of large-scale permitting efforts, interpreting environmental regulations and permit conditions, and work with operations staff to determine how best to demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements. Strategic planning and communication skills (written and verbal) are essential to discuss issues and potential solutions with team members, company leadership, stakeholder groups, and regulatory agencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the leader for the Company’s permitting and compliance assistance team, including providing technical guidance, strategic direction, and career mentoring.
- Prepare and execute the permitting strategies in collaboration with the permitting team and business group peers.
- Lead or provide direction and support for enforcement actions as needed.
- Coordinate with the business groups and legal team on due diligence activities.
- Coordinate with operations teams to ensure understanding of compliance obligations and appropriate implementation.
- Coordinate with Environmental Programs team to ensure regulations and permits are integrated into the Company’s EMS software, develop and implement compliance guidance and work practice standards, and participate in scheduled compliance assessments.
- Track and report on established KPIs, the status of critical projects, and identified risks to senior leadership.
Typical Education
- B.S. in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, Biology, Environmental Science or related degree programs.
Relevant Experience
- At least 10 years of environmental compliance or permitting experience in a mining, manufacturing, or industrial setting.
- Working knowledge of Title V, Tier II, EPCRA, NPDES, SPCC, PWS, RCRA, FIFRA, and TSCA program requirements.
- Demonstrated experience leading a large scale, multi-year permitting projects under the U.S. Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, or National Environmental Policy Act.
- Prior leadership experience managing technical staff and consultants.
- Must be able to read existing and emerging regulations and translate into requirements that will be shared with operating facilities.
- Must have demonstrated project management skills, such as detailed project scoping, tracking expenditures, communication of project status to stakeholders, and on-time completion of assignments.
- Must be able to work professionally with all levels of Company personnel, regulatory agencies, special interest groups, and members of the public.
