Credit Analyst
The Simplot Company is a diverse, privately held global food and agriculture company headquartered in Boise, Idaho. We are a true farm-to-table company with an integrated portfolio including food processing and food brands, phosphate mining, fertilizer manufacturing, farming, ranching and cattle production, and other enterprises related to agriculture.
Summary
The Credit Analyst supports U.S. domestic business-to-business customers across the Food/North American Food Group and Wholesale Agriculture portfolios. The role evaluates and monitors commercial credit risk, manages assigned accounts receivable and collection activity, supports responsible sales, and helps convert receivables into timely cash while protecting company assets.
The analyst investigates new and existing customers; evaluates financial capacity, payment behavior, and account exposure; and makes or recommends credit decisions within delegated authority and established policies. This customer-facing financial role involves large-dollar commercial transactions and requires balanced judgment, disciplined documentation, and appropriate escalation when matters exceed the analyst’s authority.
This is a full-time onsite position at Simplot HQ in Boise, Idaho.
Key Responsibilities
- Customer onboarding and credit investigation: Review new account applications, renewals, and requests for credit or limit changes. Obtain and evaluate available commercial credit reports, bank and trade references, financial information, legal-entity documentation, and other relevant indicators of creditworthiness.
- Financial and payment-risk analysis: Analyze financial statements, payment history, aging trends, credit utilization, purchasing requirements, and other relevant business factors. Identify material concerns, emerging risks, and situations requiring additional review or escalation.
- Credit decisions and recommendations: Establish or recommend appropriate credit limits, terms, account conditions, and risk-mitigation measures based on documented analysis. Approve decisions within delegated authority and prepare clear recommendations for the appropriate approval level when exposure, exceptions, or risk exceed that authority.
- Portfolio monitoring and account management: Monitor assigned accounts for changes in payment behavior, financial condition, exposure, purchasing activity, ownership, or other risk indicators. Complete periodic reviews and recommend appropriate changes to limits, terms, holds, or account status.
- Collections and aging management: Review accounts receivable aging, contact past-due B2B customers, secure and document payment commitments, issue appropriate communications, and follow through until payment or resolution.
- Dispute and account-issue resolution: Investigate billing, deduction, payment-application, account-setup, and other customer issues. Work with customers and internal teams to identify root causes and drive practical resolution while maintaining appropriate financial controls.
- Order-hold review: Evaluate orders on credit hold by considering delinquency, existing exposure, available credit, payment commitments, customer risk, and other relevant information. Release orders within delegated authority or escalate with a documented assessment and recommendation.
- Professional customer and business communication: Communicate directly with customers by telephone and in writing regarding past-due balances, payment commitments, information requests, credit decisions, holds, account issues, and next steps. Communications must be timely, clear, professional, appropriately firm, and respectful.
- Cross-functional partnership: Coordinate with Sales, Customer Service, Cash Application, Accounting, Finance, and other internal partners to resolve issues, communicate risk, support customer needs, and facilitate responsible sales without compromising credit controls.
- Documentation and compliance: Maintain complete, accurate, and timely records of customer contacts, analysis, approvals, recommendations, commitments, disputes, holds, and account changes. Follow established credit policies, internal controls, documentation standards, and escalation requirements.
- Reporting and continuous improvement: Prepare recurring reports and management information as assigned. Participate in training, process improvement, system enhancement, documentation, and other projects that improve Credit operations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from 4 year college or university
- Demonstrated analytical and critical-thinking ability, including the ability to evaluate financial, payment, customer, or account information and form supportable conclusions.
- Ability and willingness to communicate professionally with external B2B customers and internal partners by telephone, email, and other written formats.
- Demonstrated organization and prioritization skills in an environment with multiple simultaneous responsibilities and changing business demands.
- Ability to exercise judgment, work through incomplete or conflicting information, and recognize when escalation is required.
- Working knowledge of basic accounting concepts, business math, accounts receivable, or related financial processes.
- Ability to maintain accurate, timely, and appropriately documented records.
- Ability to learn new systems, processes, portfolio requirements, and commercial-credit concepts and to apply coaching and feedback.
- Ability to handle difficult collection, dispute, or risk conversations with professionalism, tact, and appropriate firmness.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in commercial credit, accounts receivable, business-to-business collections, financial services, accounting, customer account management, or a related field.
- Experience reviewing commercial credit reports, trade or bank references, financial statements, payment history, or customer risk.
- Experience resolving complex customer account, billing, deduction, payment, or collection issues.
- Exposure to food, agriculture, manufacturing, wholesale distribution, or another business with significant commercial customer transactions.
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university, subject to HR confirmation regarding whether education should be required, preferred, or eligible for an approved experience equivalency.
What Success Looks Like
- Analytical Thinking and Sound Judgment: Gathers relevant facts, identifies relationships and inconsistencies, and evaluates both risk and business need. Reaches logical, supportable conclusions rather than relying solely on a checklist or a single data point.
- Persistence and Follow-Through: Demonstrates determination in obtaining information, resolving account issues, securing payment commitments, and completing assigned work despite delays, resistance, or setbacks. Maintains appropriate follow-up until there is a documented resolution or next step.
- Self-Direction and Accountability: Takes ownership of assigned accounts, commitments, deadlines, and customer follow-up. Organizes work independently, communicates barriers promptly, and seeks appropriate guidance without waiting for every activity to be specifically directed.
- Judgment in Ambiguous Situations: Works effectively when information is incomplete, circumstances change, or the correct course is not immediately obvious. Uses policy, available evidence, experience, and business context to develop a reasonable path forward and recognizes when escalation is required.
- Practical Problem Solving: Looks beyond the immediate symptom to identify root causes, downstream effects, and workable solutions. Evaluates alternatives and clearly explains the reasoning behind recommendations.
- Professional Verbal and Written Communication: Is willing and able to initiate customer and business phone calls, including collection and issue-resolution conversations. Produces clear, concise, professional emails, account notes, and recommendations. Communicates difficult decisions diplomatically and firmly when needed.
- Learning Agility and Receptiveness to Coaching: Demonstrates curiosity, learns new systems and business processes, applies feedback, and builds technical credit knowledge over time. Asks thoughtful questions and incorporates coaching into future work.
- Prioritization and Adaptability: Manages competing priorities, including collections, order holds, customer issues, credit reviews, information requests, reporting deadlines, and changing business needs. Reassesses priorities based on risk, urgency, exposure, and seasonal demand.
- Care with Large-Dollar Commercial Exposure: Understands that decisions may involve significant financial exposure and applies appropriate diligence, documentation, and escalation. Remains objective under time pressure or conflicting demands.
- Customer and Business Partnership: Maintains constructive relationships while protecting the company’s financial interests. Seeks practical solutions that support responsible sales without avoiding necessary collection or risk-management conversations.
