Microbiology Technician P2 Portage FG

Summary

The Microbiology Lab Technician will be responsible for collecting and preparing product samples for microbiological analysis.

This position primarily provides data used in making quality and food safety determinations for processed potato products and sanitation-related activities.  

Key Responsibilities

Demonstrates understanding of basic concepts of microbiology and adheres to the biosafety guidelines as outlined by CFIA and PHAC; follows aseptic technique, handles bio-hazardous materials accordingly, understands the nature of the microorganisms analyzed, etc.

Demonstrates an understanding basic chemistry; prepares associated microbiological and chemical reagents, solutions and media.

Performs microbial and chemical analysis as outlined in the QA Procedure Manual; this includes allergen and ATP swabbing related to sanitation activities.

Correlates and maintains all data pertaining to the microbiology job function; reviews corrective action items and identifies trends.

Reports quality problems to the QA Supervisor; initiates and organizes informational meetings to review Environmental Program trends; assists with identifying contributing factors in the facility.

Conducts lot sampling for the disposition of product.

Performs related equipment calibrations and minor trouble-shooting; monitors performance of micro lab equipment; reports problems to QA Supervisor.

Interacts with equipment and product suppliers and vendors; conducts inventories and assists with new testing method evaluations.

Typical Education
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Willing and eligible for enrollment in training related to microbiology and chemistry.

Microbiology-related experience is required as outlined in the Job Skills Evaluation (JSE).

Other Information

Must be able to obtain certification for the Transport of Dangerous Goods

Must have an understanding of basic microbiology and chemistry; enrollment in post secondary training should commence with first available course/workshop after the bid is awarded.

Must be able to travel to the US; currently holds or is eligible to apply for a passport.

Must be able to read, understand, and communicate in a manner to successfully perform the job duties.

Must have the ability to coordinate work responsibilities and use good judgment in making decisions.

Must have basic math skills including calculating averages, ratios, and dilutions.

Must be able to use analytical instruments with precision and accuracy.

Must be able to meet the sensory demands of the job, including measuring samples

Must be able to enter data into the computer accurately.
