Summary

This job ensures efficient operation of all electrical systems and electrical/electronic components on site. This position is responsible for Plant instrumentation, control systems, and electrical/electronic equipment, as well as other associated equipment. The individual in this position must be capable of troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, programming, documenting, upgrading, and the laying out and installing of equipment and systems. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensures the operation, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintenance (to a high level of reliability) of all existing process control equipment from computers and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) to the motor controllers and field devices, including Variable Frequency Drives (VFD), instrumentation and wiring.
  • Ensures the calibration, installation, and documentation of electrical/electronic equipment, control systems, and instruments to meet operational and maintenance goals.
  • Ensures the safe and efficient programming of control systems, such as PLC’s, SCADA systems, Human Machine Interface (HMI), stand alone controllers, and other devices as required.
  • Ensures the accuracy of data reporting systems and records, such as maintenance logs, preventative maintenance forms, work orders, inventory control forms, and other documentation as required.
  • Ensures the effective training of new Process Control Technicians and provides on going training for other team members.
  • Maintains work area in a clean and functional condition.
  • Performs assigned responsibilities during Plant evacuation or other emergency situations.
  • Ensures attendance and participation in training activities appropriate to the position and incorporates acquired skills and knowledge.
  • Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies.
  • Ensures self-compliance with Company policies and procedures and Union Labor Agreement.
  • Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a participative management style consistent with operational goals.

Typical Education

Must hold a certificate of completion from an approved 2-year trade school, or equivalent experience in the instrumentation/process control trades (this experience may be all work experience or a combination of work experience and schooling).

  • A copy of school transcripts must be supplied.
 

Relevant Experience

  • Knowledge of basic physics and chemistry; intermediate math skills with the ability to accurately measure and take readings. Knowledge of entire pieces of equipment including, but not limited to process control, motors, final control elements, electronics, industrial networks, signaling standards, fluid dynamics, etc. Knowledge of 4-20mA control signals; ability to read and interpret proportional, integral, derivative (PID) controller. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications to include, but not limited to Excel, Word, etc.
  • Skills: Must demonstrate initiative; be assertive, enthusiastic, accurate, and detail-oriented.  Excellent attendance record and punctual. Required to operate a fork lift, and/or other equipment as needed;
    Abilities: Ability to prepare basic written and/or computer reports. Ability to work independently or under minimal supervisor; a team player, and ability to work with multiple disciplines.  Ability to read and understand all equipment and machinery manuals; ability to conduct research as needed.
  • Physical Requirements: This job requires the ability to work in excess of eight hours per day, off-duty hours, and weekends to reach operational goals and compliance requirements. This individual must have the ability to operate a front-end loader, forklift, and/or other motorized equipment. Job duties may require the ability to climb stairs, climb ladders, bend, stoop, reach, lift, grip, push, pull, move and/or carry equipment which may be in excess of 50 pounds. 
  • Must have a minimum of twenty-four months of instrumentation experience in a manufacturing facility or equivalent.
  • Must have a thorough working knowledge of electrical systems and electrical safety practices, analog and digital instrumentation, programmable logic controllers, SCADA systems, as well as other control systems.
  • Must have basic computer skills of word processing, databases, spreadsheets, basic DOS and windows commands to produce reports and documentation as required.
  • Must have the ability to use electrical and electronic test equipment for performing maintenance and troubleshooting
