The Analytical Lab Technician 1, under the direction of the Lab Supervisor, learns processes and procedures for conducting and analyzing chemical and physical laboratory tests of solid materials, liquids, and gases. The incumbent will work primarily with in-process fertilizer samples, sulfuric acid, ammonia solutions, coated fertilizers, dry blends, and raw materials. The Analytical Lab Technician 1 is responsible for general cleaning throughout the laboratory and assisting other lab technicians as necessary.

Key Responsibilities


  • Assists in conducting chemical and physical laboratory and/or field tests according to established procedures; responsible for learning and complying with all procedures and regulations. 
  • Prepares samples of fertilizer by grinding, digesting, and filtering; assists in preparing solutions to test and analyze products.  Follows laboratory guidelines to determine strength, stability, purity, and chemical content. 
  • Documents results of tests and analyses into specified laboratory notebook or spreadsheet; checks for accuracy and adherence to internal and external requirements.
  • Analyzes sulfuric acid using Density Sound Analyzer or Titration method; operates a hydrometer and performs limited trace analysis to analyze ammonia solutions.
  • Analyzes  ammonium sulfate samples, coated fertilizers, dry blends, and raw materials; applies methods to test for contents including, but not limited to percent moisture, nitrogen, phosphate, potash, iron, zinc, release rate, etc.  Documents all calculations, and reports on bagged sample work orders.
  • Maintains and cleans laboratory instruments and equipment after use and as needed; responsible for following material recycling guidelines and appropriate waste disposal.
  • Assists in maintaining laboratory records and general clerical tasks; files and organizes historical data, performs general data entry.
  • Cleans and dusts sinks, tables, walls, floors, shelves, and other surfaces as assigned.Cleans sulfuric, ammonia hydroxide, phosphoric acid, and Gal-Xe release rate sample bottles for reuse.
  • Maintains a safe working environment by complying with all rules and regulations, and continuously practices safety while performing duties; follows proper chemical handling procedures.
  • Wears the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to steel toed boots, safety glasses, hard hat, hearing protection, long-sleeved cotton shirts, and gloves when entering specified plant areas at all times.  Required to wear safety glasses and lab coats in the laboratory at all times; occasionally wears face shield, plastic aprons, and acid gloves as required based on the assigned task.

Typical Education

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • College Chemistry Courses or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience in laboratory chemistry.

Relevant Experience

  • 1 – 3 years’ lab experience required.
  • Advanced math skills and reasoning, with the ability to accurately measure small samples.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry and/or related disciplines; knowledge of laboratory safety and proper equipment/material care and maintenance preferred.
  • Ability to work with glassware and various tools including, but not limited to splitter, grinder, acid analyzer, continuous flow analyzer, flame photometer, % moisture analyzer, hydrometer, gas burners, and calculator.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications to include but not limited to Excel, Word, etc.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, time management skills and attention to details.
  • Must have a positive, pleasant, friendly, energetic, professional image and demeanor; Punctuality is required.
  • Must be able to balance multiple tasks, be organized, and work well under pressure.
  • Shows initiative and willingness to learn and grow with the company; team player with strong work ethic.
  • Required to maintain reliable, regular attendance.

This job requires the ability to work rotating shifts normally of eight hours per day, but up to 12 hours per day, to include weekends, swing and nights, to reach operational goals and compliance requirements in a laboratory that operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week. 

This individual may be required to operate a motor vehicle.  Job duties may require the ability to bend, stoop, reach, lift, grip, push, pull, move and/or carry product which may be in excess of 50 pounds.  This individual may be required to stand for extended periods of time while conducting tests.  Finger dexterity is required to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, and use small tools.  This job requires the ability to detect color changes in various chemical testing, and use senses including, but not limited to vision, touch, hearing, smelling, etc. to analyze materials.

Working in this plant operations environment requires the use of safety equipment to include, but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, hard hat, face shield, respiratory protective equipment, and uniforms (in some areas).  This individual may be subject to variations in noise levels and temperature changes due to weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, this individual is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.  Loose fitting clothing, open toe/heel shoes and the wearing of contact lenses are not permitted; required to wear a lab coat.
