The Environmental Manager is responsible for the development, coordination, execution, and maintenance of the environmental programs, processes, and procedures that assure compliance with Simplot Policies and Federal, State, and Local regulations. These individual reviews, evaluates, analyzes, and/or completes work processes at the Helm facility to encourage and maintain environmental protection and compliance. The Environmental Manager works under general direction and exercises reasonable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignments. Projects and other work are reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives set forth by leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops, maintains, and manages small environmental regulatory programs and/or major elements of larger programs and projects. Work includes interaction with regulatory agencies, including regular written and oral communication, as well as leading site inspections.
  • Interprets compliance requirements and evaluates environmental performance; suggests and/or implements corrective actions/improvements.
  • Conducts scientific investigation which includes analyzing and interpreting trends and patterns, using established precedents and standards. Operates, maintains, and monitors operating systems (i.e., water management, CEMs systems, and waste disposal, etc.) to ensure compliance with established requirements and guidelines.
  • Provides technical guidance in interpreting and monitoring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry guidelines. Reviews technical documents to ensure their accuracy and completeness. Keeps current on the changes developing in the regulations and in legislation and briefs departments that may be affected. Assists in the evaluation and review of proposed and existing codes, standards, regulations, and guidelines to determine the impact on programs and facility modifications.
  • Develops, oversees, and, at times, utilizes appropriate sampling and monitoring procedures and guidelines.
  • Researches, recommends, and supervises contractors as needed; manages environmental-related projects as assigned.
  • Maintains safe working environment by complying with all rules and regulations, and continuously practices safety while performing duties. Ensures that all personnel are maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Wears the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to steel-toed boots, safety glasses, hard hat, ear protection, and gloves are required when entering specified plant areas and are not to be removed whilst in specified area. Additional PPE may be required based on your job duties.

Typical Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering or related field and/or two or more years of related experience. 

Required Qualifications

  • Must have previous experience working in a complex plant environment.
  • Must have demonstrated leadership skills; exhibits confidence in self and others; inspires and motivates others to perform well; effectively influences the actions and opinions of others; effective delegation.
  • Must have a strong working knowledge of federal and state environmental laws including RCRA, CWA, CAA, EPCRA, RMP, and HMTA
  • Experience and familiarity with Central Valley and/or South Coast Air regulations and a strong background in Title V a plus.
  • Must be able to accurately define problems, collect data, interpret analytical results, draw valid conclusions, and make reasonable recommendations to upper management.
  • Must be capable and willing to respond to environmental emergencies during off-shifts, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications to include, but not limited to Excel, Word, etc. required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Required Certifications

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) and Certified Air Permit Professional (CAP) certifications are a plus

Physical Requirements:

This job requires the ability to work in excess of eight hours per day on site, off-duty hours, and weekends to reach operational goals and compliance requirements.  This individual must have the ability to operate a motor vehicle. Job duties may require the ability to climb stairs, climb ladders, bend, stoop, reach, lift, grip, push, pull, move and/or carry equipment which may be in excess of 25 pounds.  Finger dexterity may be required to operate a computer keyboard and calculator. In order to perform the duties of this job, the incumbent may be required to walk in excess of 500 yards to reach equipment/areas across the facility.


Working in this plant operations environment requires the use of safety equipment to include, but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, hard hat, face shield, respiratory protective equipment, and uniforms. This individual may be subject to variations in noise levels and temperature changes due to weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, this individual is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.  Loose fitting clothing, open toe/heel shoes and the wearing of contact lenses are not permitted.


This is an on-site position that will work Monday-Friday normal business hours.  There is not a hybrid or remote work option.

Wage range or rate of pay: $95,000 - $110,000 (DOE)  Plus annual incentive plan eligibility
