Staff Veterinarian (Grand View, ID)

Responsible for the health and well‑being of all cattle and horses on Land & Livestock ranches, farms, and feedlots. Includes preventive care as well as diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and injuries. Monitors health of animals and studies effectiveness of medications, vaccinations, feeding programs, etc. Investigates unusual problems such as feed contamination or unusually high condemnation rates. Ensures compliance with federal and state agencies where applicable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage neonatal calf care (dairy and beef origin) including employee training, feeding equipment, facilities, ventilation, calf/cattle movements, colostrum management (passive transfer), nutrition, immunization, and protocol execution.
  • Provide technical support to dairy heifer management team including pregnancy diagnosis, reproductive record analysis, immunization strategies and protocols, estrus synchronization, protocol enforcement, and personnel training.
  • Provide technical support to managers, supervisors, pen riders, veterinary technicians, and cowboys at feedlots and ranches regarding diagnosis and prevention of disease, medical emergency management, and enhancement of livestock immunity, health and performance.
  • Provide technical support to Cattle Manager for coaching and development of pen riders and veterinary technicians.
  • Provide input for use in developing and implementing strategies to enhance positive outcomes in areas of general health, vaccination, treatment, etc.
  • Provide technical support to feedlot and ranch supervisors to implement, train and reinforce low stress cattle handling techniques.
  • Evaluate health and treatment records to provide recommendations to feedlot and ranch management teams on immunization and treatment protocols including product and protocol efficacy and cost/benefit analysis.
  • Monitor sanitation status and effectiveness of established sanitary programs and report to management.
  • Provide technical support to feedlot manager for fly and pest control.
  • Diagnose and treat (medically and/or surgically) illnesses and injuries. Train feedlot and ranch personnel diagnosis and treatment techniques.
  • Provide obstetrical technical services (pregnancy diagnosis, cesarean sections, spaying, etc.).
  • Investigate unusual circumstances such as feed contamination or unusually high condemnation rates at the slaughterhouse.
  • Serve as liaison between state and federal agencies (USFDA, ID Dept. of Agriculture) to ensure compliance with all applicable rules and regulations.
  • Monitor cattle interstate and intrastate movements and ensure appropriate Certificates of Veterinary Inspection are complete.

Typical Education

  • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent

Relevant Experience

  • 3-5 years related experience and/or training
  • Extensive knowledge of beef and dairy cattle is required; and knowledge of state and federal regulations as they apply to the beef cattle industry. 
  • Ability to develop and evaluate animal health programs including pest control, vaccinations, and trials of new products, drugs, and feed.

Required Certifications/Licenses/Registations

  • Certificates:   Graduate from School of Veterinary Medicine
  • Licenses:   Licensed by Board of Veterinary Medicine ‑ State of Idaho required, Oregon, Nevada, Washington preferred
  • Registrations:   Idaho Board of Pharmacy FDA ‑ controlled substance registration
