R&D Technical Support Services Manager

This role will be for an experienced hands-on Food Chemist with starch and oil chemistry knowledge & experience, providing technical services to support various Quality and Innovation (Q&I) groups toward ingredient and product development for a variety of product categories (potatoes, vegetables & seasoned grains & blends, and avocado) as well as responsible for day-to-day laboratory operations.  This position will work closely with Q&I team throughout the NPD process to bring more science in the design, development, and implementation of new products.  This position requires a strong inclination to build ingredient science and functionality knowledge as a foundation for working with Product Development, Marketing & Sales in optimizing current products and developing new products with differentiated benefits and then ensuring these benefits are measurable during operations for consistent quality production. 

Key Responsibilities


  • Establish operational systems and protocols that ensure the smooth operation of a dynamic, growing R&D laboratory
  • Ensure good lab practices (GLP) and maintain zero work-related injuries, laboratory compliance, and appropriate documentation
  • Responsible for overall equipment maintenance & repair, supplies & service contracts
  • Develop and maintain SOP’s, train & develop staff
  • Responsible for proficiency validations at manufacturing sites
  • Responsible for proper documentation via LIMS, budget, and capital expenditures
  • Provide technical services support toward ingredient and new product development
  • Partner with technical team members to provide relative scientific data during development stages and provide analytical & physical measures to define key quality attributes and CCP’s.
  • Identify external and develop internal methods as needed to ensure relevant analytical & physical measures are available when needed. 
  • Proactively solve problems requiring advanced level of technical knowledge and consideration of other disciplines. 
  • Partner with cross functional technical groups to develop new specifications and SOP’s and procedures for new products and processes to ensure supplier compliance and product quality consistency.


Typical Education


  • Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S.) from 4 year college or university is required
  • Masters Degree (M.A. or M.S.) is preferred
Relevant Experience
  • 8-10+ years related experience and/or training
  • Excellent organizational and people skills with the ability to build strong relationships and influence people at all organization levels
  • Strong communication skills that can make the complex easy to understand
  • Ability to challenge conventional thinking, work autonomously and as a team member
  • Experience with LIMS as an enterprise resource planning tool
  • Starch, protein, and oil chemistry experience including laboratory analysis of food
  • Experience with instrumentation for characterization of rheology, texture, protein denaturation (Rapid Viscoanalyzer, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Dynamic Texture Analyzer, Rheometer)
  • Experience with instrumentation for starch & protein cross linking, substitution, characterization, gelatinization (ATR FT-IR, H1-NMR, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, HPLC
  • Experience with protein and amino acid analysis (Elementar N Analyzer, AA analyzer, PHLC-MS, GC-FID, NIR)
  • Ability to translate laboratory analysis to in-line processing applications and rapid methods.
