Cereal Chemist (Caldwell, ID)

Summary

This role supports Research and Development efforts to commercialize elemental potato components such as potato starch, protein and fiber.  The successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge of food chemistry.  They will act as a principal investigator working independently and in a team environment to set up and carry out experiments both at a benchtop level and a pilot scale level. The role requires a high level of laboratory technique; process knowledge is a plus.  Candidate will investigate and troubleshoot existing processes and propose new variations or entirely new processes via literature searches and various academic and industry resources. Expect to provide training and guidance to lower-level employees. May supervise other employees as a primary job function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advanced understanding and consolidated expertise in the field of food chemistry.
  • Solid bench-top experience in wide range of food systems with emphasis on protein and starches.
  • Ability to interpret customers’ product needs and translate them into viable solutions through product modifications (eg enzymes, pH, etc.).
  • Work with process development and applications teams, develop processes and procedures that ensure modifications are scalable and consistent.
  • Conduct literature / state of the art industry searches to subsequently design and execute new formulations and prototypes.
  • Conduct R&D pilot plant trials via collaboration with engineers, scientists, technologists, and technicians.
  • Work closely with multiple internal and external customers to support their needs in new product development, cost saving or process troubleshooting.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, relationship building and communication skills; and be able to work independently or as part of a cross functional team within Simplot and its customer’s organizations.
  • Prepare and present information to R&D senior management on technical topics.
  • Understand and support Food Safety and Product Quality standards. Knowledge of the day-to-day operations of a manufacturing plant a plus.

Typical Education

Master's degree (M.A. or M.S.) or equivalent plus 5 years’ experience.

Doctoral degree (Ph. D.) or equivalent plus 1 year experience.

Other Information

Carbohydrate and/or protein R&D experience preferred.
