Business Development Manager, R&D Plant Sciences

Simplot’s Plant Sciences division works to improve potato varieties, and other crops, using biotechnology for the purpose of making better food. The Business Development Manager is responsible for category development through evaluating and securing new business opportunities to build upon current technology and capabilities, expanding our portfolio of products and traits.  This role manages processes to build financial/sales models that demonstrate monetary value of new customer/product opportunities using sophisticated financial modeling techniques. Manages the initiation and maintenance of key customer relationships including contracting and contract negotiations. This role works in assigned categories within broader Plant Sciences team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop strategies to support growth of assigned categories.  Collaborate with external commercial partners to identify new opportunities to support and expand the Plant Sciences R&D portfolio. Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders inside and outside the organization.
  • Manage the development and maintenance of the business cases and financial models to support and verify business decisions and value capture strategies. Manage development of customer contracts and negotiations.  Effectively disseminate strategies through written business proposals and presentations.
  • Initiate, manage and maintain relationships with customers to ensure best outcomes on collaborations and delivering negotiated terms. Ensure required documentation is provided and/or collected throughout the scope of the project.
  • Key stakeholder in product development process for assigned categories and customer specific projects, serving as liaison between Plant Sciences and customer.

Typical Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. or B.S.) from 4-year college or university

Relevant Experience

  • 7+ years of related experience
  • Demonstrated experience in Business Development; prospecting and cultivating customer relationships and meeting or exceeding revenue targets
  • Business Development in Biotech, Plant Sciences and/or Food industries
  • Strong business acumen and leadership
  • Experience using analytics to make business decisions
  • Advanced understanding in developing a market assessment, filling the role of a subject matter expert
  • Proven use of critical thinking skills to solve complex problems and develop appropriate business development/sales strategies
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experienced at leading and managing team efforts
  • Experienced at effective interaction with collaborating partners, vendors, and contractors
