Cattle Manager

SUMMARY
Responsible for the general welfare of custom cattle within the feedlot by managing all activities involved in the shipping, receiving, processing, doctoring, daily care and moving of cattle in a manner that ensures the minimum of stress to the cattle and promotes the greatest amount of weight gain.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Supervises and schedules cowboy, vet, and processing crews to accomplish daily activities    
of pen checking, sorting, moving, processing, and doctoring as required to maintain good 
herd health.
       
Maintains and updates all cattle transactions, including processing, vaccinations,                
movements and deaths, through feedlot management software system.

Supervises the processing of cattle as they arrive at the feedlot to ensure that they are            
properly inspected, sorted, vaccinated and/or branded in a timely manner that minimizes 
stress to the animal. 
       
Monitors cattle on a daily basis, removing sick and injured cattle to the feedlot hospital for      
treatment in order to protect the herd from the spread of disease. Inspects cattle for 
evidence of disease or injury and treats animal according to experience or following 
instructions of Staff Veterinarian.

Orders vet supplies in order to maintain proper inventory levels of medication and supplies.   

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; and rewarding and disciplining employees.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 
Agriculture related BS degree from four-year college or university is preferred. Five plus years related experience and/or training in a large feedlot, dairy, or range environment. Knowledgeable in the areas of animal health, cattle stress levels, and cattle conditions generally acquired with a broad scope of experience. A combination of education and experience will be considered.  

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS 
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY 
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to saddle and ride a horse. Must have basic computer skills and have experience with Windows based operating systems.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS AND/OR ACTIONS:
A.  Organizational budget responsibilities—NONE
B.  Size of subordinate staff supervised—Supervises 20 to 30 employees on the vet, cowboy, and processing crews.
C.  Other indicators—Assists in the supervision of up to 75,000 head of cattle. Purchases up to $400,000.00 in veterinary supplies annually.
