Transportation Manager (Boise, ID)

This position is responsible for managing all aspects of AgriBusiness Wholesale transportation needs. Major duties include railroad negotiation strategy, truck transportation strategy, rail fleet management, ocean freight management and strategy. This position is also responsible for managing a team of transportation analysts.

Key Responsibilities


  • Responsible for Federal Railroad Administration compliance, penalty mitigation, and tracks regulatory changes affecting tank car ownership.
  • Designs and leads railroad negotiation strategy and manages bid events and the efforts to secure carrier quotes and pricing for customers.
  • Manages maintenance and repair programs for all AgriBusiness leased and private railcars including negotiation of contract maintenance programs and the on-going audit of Association of American Railroads in-transit repair billing.
  • Leads truck transportation strategic direction, including analysis of current truck transportation standards and how AgriBusiness can become more efficient and cost-effective. Manages truck service and pricing requirements as needed by the Group’s internal and external customers and create delivery programs that satisfy those requirements.
  • Engages in continuous analysis of AgriBusiness transportation requirements and develop service plans where appropriate.
  • Administers freight and industrial track leases.
  • Works with sales to develop logistics strategies and processes for entering new markets on a global basis and aid customers in creating a cost-effective supply chain.
  • Stays abreast of market conditions (e.g. capacity constraints, surcharges, etc.) and collaborates with sales to evaluate trade-offs between transportation costs, inventory costs, and service levels.
  • Monitors and analyzes the domestic and/or international transportation modes for opportunities to drive toward lowest cost to serve for our customers and lowest cost of ownership for the company.
  • Initiates delivering continuous improvement for the Carrier Programs.
  • Develops and maintains a process for monitoring and reviewing new business pursuits and renewal initiatives, including updating and maintaining a pipeline report of activity.
  • Provides consultation in the development and implementation of transportation solutions, including concept of operations plans, staffing and costing, systems concepts, commercial value propositions, etc.
  • Manages acquisition and disposition of transportation rolling stock and equipment for AgriBusiness Group.
  • Manages the process of negotiating ocean transportation pricing and services for all AgriBusiness Groups which market their products internationally.


Typical Education

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S.) from 4 year college or university

Relevant Experience

  • Knowledge of specific policies and practices for planning and administration of budget; ability to apply this knowledge appropriately to diverse situations.
  • Knowledge of the how's and why's of preparing and justifying business cases and value propositions; justifies business expenditures by identifying cost, benefits, ROI, opportunities, and risks.
  • Knowledge of existing and planned markets and market-related initiatives from the perspectives of the competition, the suppliers, the customer base and the regulatory environment.; ability to apply this knowledge appropriately to diverse situations.
  • Knowledge of the organization's industry group, trends, directions, major issues, regulatory considerations, and trendsetters; ability to apply this knowledge appropriately to diverse situations.
  • Knowledge of the processes, tools and operational considerations for effective and efficient movement of goods and materials throughout the manufacturing cycle.
  • Knowledge of major functional processes and associated operating requirements; ability to apply this knowledge appropriately to diverse situations.
  • Knowledge of and ability to identify a problem and use a disciplined approach to bringing that problem to a successful resolution.
  • Ability to effectively manage the business relationship and transactions with the suppliers of raw materials or product components.

  • Strong analytical skills and knowledge of the supply chain, transportation industry, and financial processes.
  • Ability to evaluate, plan, and execute supply chain strategies in accordance with business requirements.
  • Ability to conceptualize, design, implement, and monitor plans, policies, procedures and systems necessary.
  • Superior organizational, team building, planning and coordination skills are required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills are required.
  • Familiarity with network modeling desirable.
  • Broad knowledge of production operations, sales, purchasing, marketing, I/S, accounting and other functional areas preferred.
