The Data Science role at Simplot is an opportunity to bring your entrepreneurial spirit to a large organization focused on Innovation.   In this role you will apply data science to a large variety of problems across the Agribusiness value chain from farming and agronomy challenges, to manufacturing and supply chains across food production, fertilizer production and mining operations.    This role resides within a dedicated Agronomy and Data Sciences organization working across all of our business units centered on identifying business challenges linked to business strategies to deliver value to the organization and help Simplot to achieve it’s mission of feeding the world.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participates as a member of a data science and/or business intelligence team.  Will work with a small team of data and application engineers.
  • Build relationships across the businesses to uncover and identify opportunities to apply data science tools and methodologies to their problems
  • Identify and build a portfolio of projects
  • Applies data science tools to both structured and unstructured datasets.  Will work on both supervised and unsupervised learning models.
  • Deliver working predictive models per project objectives and scope.
  • Takes code from idea to delivery to end customers working with product owners, stakeholders, Data Engineers, and project managers.
  • Demonstrates technical leadership and exerts influence outside of immediate team.
  • Mentors and consults with team members and other organizations, customers and vendors on complex issues. Contributes to strategic direction for teams.
  • Independently resolves highly complex technical issues within the data science area. Partners with members of a team and other IT teams as appropriate; leads technical team while resolving key issues.
  • Identifies potential escalations and proactively alerts management and leads.
  • Independently reviews and manages highly complex and high-risk changes to critical business systems. Provides mentoring and guidance to other data scientists or business intelligence developers.
  • Ensures the architecture is adhered to by continuous review with partners and business users.

Typical Education

  • Master's degree (M.A. or M.S.) or equivalent work experience

Relevant Experience

  • Strong Python coding skill sets with significant experience utilizing standard python repositories and directories.   Aneconda experience useful.
  • Proven ability to deliver working predictive and machine learning based models
  • Experience operating in Azure Datalake environment and Databricks
  • Demonstrates an in-depth understanding of key analytical/machine learning/artificial intelligence techniques and methodologies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and technical leadership skills.
  • Strong experience with implementation, problem analysis and solutioning of analytics applications.
  • Makes use of and contributes to the analytics community.
  • Data Engineering background/experience useful
  • Exhibits a high level of initiative and integrity. Strong problem solving, priority setting, and collaboration skills. Good organizational and analytical skills.
  • Possess creative ability, consulting skills, leadership qualities, credibility and self-confidence. Influencing skills and ability to work effectively in a geographically dispersed team.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership skills.
  • Ability to translate business needs into technical requirements and solutions.
