Summary

The Logistics Category Manager will lead the creation of an overarching category plan/strategy in the ocean, rail, truck, and air space across all lines of business within Simplot.   This will be a new category role at Simplot and an opportunity to develop this space from the ground up at a company that is rapidly growing both domestically and internationally and facing increasingly complex transportation needs and demands.  The logistics category manager will need to skillfully engage and work in partnership with the logistics function within the business units to understand, and participate in the development of logistics team objectives, deliver procurement expertise, and build a solid relationship with logistics stakeholders.  The logistics category manager will be accountable for driving assurance of supply, quality, service, cost, and innovation performance results of freight and 3PL partners. Develop long-term freight and 3PL strategies. Identify and resolve complex logistics sourcing, supplier management and supply chain challenges. Recommend sourcing changes or additional capacity requirements as needed to achieve stated goals and objectives; develop and monitor sourcing processes to ensure compliance worldwide; identify non-conformance issues and take corrective actions to rapidly close gaps in practices.   This role will be a feeder role for future procurement leadership opportunities.

 

Sourcing projects will follow a defined sourcing process and require strong project management and sourcing expertise. These activities include stakeholder communication, spend analytics, project charter development, sourcing strategy development & execution (RFX, focused negotiation, demand management, etc.) contracting, and operationalization of the contract with the stakeholder. The Category Manager is responsible for helping establish a long‑term, 3‑year category plan to drive value across the enterprise for the assigned spend area. This strategy development work is done in partnership with the various business unit stakeholders across the enterprise. Category strategies include spend analytics/mapping, external market analysis, vendor management, and establishing/managing a multi‑year project portfolio for low criticality, low complexity, and smaller sized spend categories.

Key Responsibilities
  • Initiate vendor research and solution exploration; conduct spend analysis, analyze external market drivers and contract with vendors to deliver stakeholder requirements.
  • Continuously engage with contracted vendors to ensure delivery of services, quality, cost containment, and supply commitments.
  • Implement sourcing projects and operationalization of contracts to realize company benefits.
  • Work with our internal stakeholders to evaluate existing business relationships and where needed, contract and establish new vendor relationships.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and procurement teams to develop and execute comprehensive category plan(s) for assigned spend.
  • Manage a dynamic portfolio of projects and suppliers with a focus on AQSCIR
  • Initiate and execute contracting documents including MNDA’s, MSA’s and SOW’s. Participate in and lead vendor relationship and performance management reviews, as required.
Typical Education
  • Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S.) from 4 year college or university
Relevant Experience
  • 5 to 8 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience with Transportation Management systems
  • Experience with contract review and negotiations
  • 3PL and logistics sourcing experience across all modes of transportation is required
  • Experience developing and implementing logistics sourcing strategies
  • Ability to influence and quickly build credibility and sell the category strategy
  • Power BI and Excel Experience
Other Information
  • Knowledge of Supply Chain Management or related category discipline is required
  • Knowledge/experience in a commercial/procurement role
  • Knowledge working in business or functional unit supported by the category
  • Strong sales, presentation, negotiation, and market/data analytic skills.
  • High degree of industry experience in the specific category areas
