Associate Agronomist II, Seed Specialist

Summary

This role plays a critical role in the genetic improvement of potato through biotechnology and breeding at Simplot Plant Sciences (SPS).  Generating disease-free, clonally propagated potato seed remains a challenge to rapid variety development and a timely introduction of new varieties to the marketplace.  The Associate Scientist in with role will optimize existing methods and discover new methods of seed development, to decrease the time to release of new varieties and ensure less loss of seed to disease.  He/she must demonstrate the ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision, communicate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team, and actively participate in discussions and meetings.  

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Identifies points of inefficiency in current processes and methods of pre-nuclear, nuclear and early generation potato seed development
  • Develops high-throughput methods of disease-free nuclear and early generation seed production to improve on the rates currently achieved by the best in the business
  • Acts as local SPS expert on new paradigms of seed production for clonally propagated crops like true potato seed or apomictic seed systems
  • Assists in the development of novel potato cropping systems starting from true potato seed as starting material
  • Assists in the maintenance of pre-commercial and commercial seed inventories currently being held at SPS. 
  • Ensures SPS cultivar purity and prevents admixtures. 
    • Conducts tests to preserve genetic purity of SPS varieties held in tissue culture repository
    • Conducts tests to preserve genetic purity and varietal identity of seed lots.

 

Typical Education

  • Master’s degree and 2+ years of experience or Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of relevant experience.

Relevant Experience

  • Competency in plant reproductive biology, seed science, agronomy and horticulture is required. 
  • An understanding of plant pathology is also desirable.
  • An understanding of potato production systems and the problems inherent in the systems.
  • Proficient use of appropriate tools to document and analyze experiments
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills, intellectual leadership.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working collaboratively and independently in support of team efforts.
  • Some travel nationally to supervise collaborative research projects and field trials
